EVENT: Launch of Steve Langan’s poetry collection Bedtime Stories has been postponed due to inclement weather.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 15TH at 5 PM Stone Broke Bread and Books in Gardiner hosts novelists Gillian Burnes (Soft Features) and Laurel Dodge (The Buoyant Letters of Mimsy Bell) for a reading and a stimulating conversation. 347 Water Street, Gardiner.

EVENT: Portland Poetry Festival CLICK TO SEE PROGRAM

LOCATION: Odd Fellows Hall, above Back Cove Books, 651 Forest Ave at Woodford’s Corner, Portland, Maine.

DETAILS: The Festival is a day-long celebration of poetry. We begin with a morning of poetry-writing workshops for young people led by poet Kate Hagopian Berry. The afternoon begins with an hour-long poetry reading by 12 poets, with a musical interlude by Phil Carlsen and Carl Dimow. “Hole in the Head Review” editor Bill Schulz will announce the finalists for the Charles Simic Award. There will be a panel discussion on “The Role of Poetry in This Dangerous New World.” The Festival will conclude with poets and musicians celebrating the work of the late poet Jacqueline Moore. Join us for poetry, music, and conversation. Admission is free and all are welcome.

With deep sadness we announce the death of our friend Jacqueline Moore. Her poetry collection Chasing the Grass inspired us to begin the Contemporary Maine Poetry Series. Her poems in that book and in Balancing Act 2 continue to instruct and delight us. She lived a long and adventurous life and we will miss her.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS: Claire Millikin’s poem, “Burying the Moon”, was published in the Winter 2023 edition of The Maine Arts Journal. Claire is the author of Elegiaca Americana and the co-editor of Enough!. Jeri Theriault has been awarded a Maine Arts Commission 2023 Fellowship Award. Jeri’s poems appear in Balancing Act 2 and she is the editor of Wait: Poems from the Pandemic. Poems by Gary Lawless (How the Stones Came to Venice), Katherine Hagopian Berry (Mast Year) and Leslie Moore (What Rough Beasts) were published in the 2022 edition of the Italian literary journal Tellus. Congratulations to all!
